“As it happens, turning real life emotions and occurrences into songs can be a very therapeutic and cleansing experience. When written, the lyrics are raw and sometimes painful to get out, but for me-and with this record in particular-it’s been a huge helping hand in getting over what went before. You see, once thoughts become lyrics, they stop being mine, and become fair game for whoever wants them. Whether I like it or not, that’s the reality. It’s absurd and overwhelming, and extremely flattering, but people apply their own meaning and life experiences to these words. They shout them back at us at concerts, get them tattooed on their body and retype them on their own blogs or school text books (often incorrectly, much to my chagrin). And then, what was real life for me becomes so distended that it doesn’t even make sense anymore. They’re no longer real life events, but stories. Cautionary tales, perhaps. The process of writing a more detailed analysis of these songs has served a similar purpose. I’m free.”
